Product engineering plays an obvious critical role in achieving success with a product. To a great extent, product management’s success will be determined in large part by their working relationship with engineering.  Product managers depend on engineers for information to make decisions and to manage expectations, and engineers depend on product managers for credible information and decisive actions to do their jobs well. A product manager needs a suite of skills and know-how to make this key relationship work effectively and to gain the buy-in and enthusiasm of engineering.

In this PSN Member Roundtable, we’ve invited 3 experienced practitioners to share their practices, tips, and lessons learned with collaborating with the engineering team: Terri Parasida, Product & Marketing Manager with Cardinal Health; Ken Kolenik, Product Manager with invivodata, and Al Biglan, Director of Software at Vocollect.  We will start the Roundtable meeting by asking the questions below and all participants will have ample opportunity to ask their specific questions, and get ideas and advice:

  • What does engineering need and expect from product management? And vice versa?
  • What are the key ingredients to establishing a key working relationship with engineering?
  • Which behaviors, attitudes and beliefs are effective? Which are ineffective?
  • Which product decisions are best made using consensus? Using a consultative approach? Using an authoritative approach?
  • How do you gain buy-in to the product vision, product roadmap, market requirements and priorities with engineering?
  • What are effective techniques to getting credible estimates and/or commitments from engineering? And how do they vary over the course of a product’s idea and development stages?
  • How technical does a product manager need to be effective and credible?
