The Product Roadmap represents a key deliverable and communications vehicle in managing the life cycle of a product line or product portfolio. However, many questions abound with regards to what exactly is a Product Roadmap and what are the best practices to be considered. Does the roadmap drive the strategy of the product or is it the output from the strategy? When and how should roadmaps be communicated? And what processes should be adopted to effectively manage both technology and market trends in shaping the roadmap?
In this Web Forum presentation, these and other questions will be addressed by Kareem Yusuf, Ph.D., Director of Product Management, WebSphere Software, IBM Corporation (LinkedIn Profile). Dr. Yusuf will share how he has effectively leveraged product roadmaps at IBM as part of the strategic product planning process.
Key Takeaways
- How an organization can go about creating, updating and managing a portfolio of product roadmaps
- How product roadmaps can be used to help product management create more strategic, timely product plans versus tactical, incremental release plans
- The value of using product roadmaps not only as a communications vehicle, but also as a key management tool for developing and executing product strategy
- How companies rationalize the product roadmaps of multiple companies after a merger or acquisition
- The basics of creating product roadmaps for platform products such as IBM's WebSphere product line
- The value of a regular, collaborative process to create and share roadmaps
- Understanding how the product roadmapping practice can evolve in a company
